7 great attic conversion ideas

Looking for some unique attic conversion ideas? An extra bedroom or two is the most popular use for an attic conversion, but what you do with the space is only limited by your imagination. Teenage den, games room or home gym, anyone?

Here are some of our favourite ideas for an attic conversion.

1. Loft living room

A living room may not be your first idea for an attic conversion, but it can be a great space to socialise and relax. Think spacious couches, cosy armchairs, loads of rugs and cushions to create a family haven away from the busyness of downstairs. It’s a particularly good option if your home has nice views - roof windows will help show them off to their best and will let the natural light pour in too. 2. An attic home office

As remote working becomes ever more commonplace, having a dedicated office space at home is a popular idea. An attic office creates a quiet space for conference calls or concentration, then you can close the door at the end of the day to keep the home/work balance intact. You don’t need a huge amount of space either - try a bespoke desk or custom shelving to make a real feature of the attic room’s unique angles.

3. Luxurious loft master suite

A master suite may an obvious attic conversion idea, but it’s popular for good reason! Dedicating the entire attic space to a master suite is a chance to ask - what would the bedroom of your dreams look like? It might have a walk-in dressing room, a day bed for reading, a gigantic bathtub, a super king sized bed, or all of the above! Imagine heading up the stairs at the end of a long day, knowing you’ve got an oasis of rest and relaxation waiting for you...

4. Teenage attic den

Teenagers are mysterious creatures, but one thing we do know is that they love is a bit of privacy. A teenage bedroom is a great idea for an attic conversion. When planning your attic conversion think about creating different zones, such as sleeping area, a study corner with desk, a hang out  space for visiting friends. If you have space, an ensuite is a must to eliminate the morning rush in the downstairs bathroom!

5. A space for guests

Turning your attic into a self-contained apartment could be a good idea if you have a family member staying for an extended period, or just like having guests over. Include a bathroom and a kitchenette to give them full self-sufficiency and privacy.

6. Go up for a games room

Always dreamed of having your mates around to play cards all night long? Just add mini fridge, comfy chairs and darts board. If your attic is of epic proportions you may even be able to fit a pool table or ping pong table. Be sure to think about soundproofing: quality carpet underlay and acoustic mineral wool floor insulation will help sound leaking to the rooms below.

7. Home gym

If you find it hard to get out to the gym, why not bring the gym to your attic? Whether its cardio equipment, weights or some gentle yoga, install roof windows to add loads of natural light and so you can easily open if you get a sweat. Paint the walls in a light colour and add mirrors to further bounce the light and allow you to check your form. If you have room, add a sofa bed so the attic has the flexibility to accommodate guests. An ensuite shower room is also a good idea if you have the space to create a full self-contained gym. Finally, make sure the floors are soundproofed so no one downstairs is disturbed if your workouts get lively!
